Hampshire County Council has withdrawn the subsidy that enabled the Sunday 76 and 86 Services to Andover, Basingstoke and Winchester and the Thursday service to Newbury. This was on the grounds of cost and the removal was made by the Council Committee responsible for bus subsidies. A petition to reverse the decision was raised with many signatures fro concerned citizens. This petition was presented to the Council on 29th September. A vote was taken on whether to refer the cuts back to the Committee for further consideration, given the depth of feeling on the matter in Whitchurch. The vote went against refering the decision back, Whitchurch's County Councillor, John Maxwell voted that the issue for not referred back. This means that Whitchurch's Councillor voted that the bus services should not receive a subsidyIt was left to Basingstoke and Deane to fund the partial restoration of the Whitchurch - Basingstoke service What do you think?

Maxwell had the choice of how he voted yet chose not to support the needs of Whitchurch residents. I'm also peterurbed that the proposals to cut the services were apparently made in July, yet the matter was not brought to the attention of local people until nearly two months later It wasn't just Mr Maxwell who has something to answer for, but also others who claim to represent the Town.

kot, Thanks for you input I have asked the question of John Maxwell and the chairman of the committee about why there was no consultation or contact with Whitchurch residents - the only answer has come from the Committee Chairman, Tim Knight "I was very concern about that and took the decision to go for a shorter consultation period, to save changing a lot more services. In the cases where the Councils asked for extra time until their next meeting we provisionally safeguarded the route/s, until they had their meeting." You could ask the same question yourself of the councillors [email protected] and [email protected]Phil
