Kerbside collections

If a household wants a second or third recycling bin, they can have another 240 litre one on request 01256 844844. These bins are to be used for:

  • mixed paper (inc newspapers, magazines, directories, junk mail & Yellow Pages)
  • plastic bottles (please remove lids) - no other plastic items
  • food tins, drinks cans and aerosols unless they have the 'skull and crossbones' logo
  • cardboard (preferably flattened) - if you have lots of cardboard which will not fit in the bin, it can be flattened and left next to the bin on the day of collection and will be recycled.

New!!From 16 April 2012 glass jars and bottles will also be collected - they should be put in the 40 litre plastic box supplied by B&DBC; and left alongside the green recycling bin.

Green Waste for Composting

BDBC provides a kerbside collection service for green waste.

The best way to deal with green waste, even small amounts of kitchen waste, is to compost it. BDBC is currently subsidising the purchase of food digesters and hot composters visit the website for details.

Furniture

The Community Furniture Project is a registered local charity, providing furniture, household goods, electrical items and toys at low cost to people living on a low income in Newbury, Basingstoke and the surrounding towns and villages.
It is able to do this by receiving and collecting furniture and other items generously given by local people. It also also offers training and opportunities for people to develop work and social skills, and encourage environmentally beneficial activities.
For more information visit the project's website

Freecycle

There are local groups up and down the country that offer unwanted items to others on the internet. This is probably the ultimate in recycling as items go straight to someone who will use them, the only rule is that the items must be offered free. There are groups covering both the Andover and Basingstoke areas. Just click on the links to find out more.
